The NAIT Optical Sciences Contact Lenses Certificate program is produced by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and is administered by the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC) to students outside of the province of Alberta and Territories. This program is accredited by Accreditation Canada and is offered in English and French.
The ability to dispense contact lenses is a specialized skill, one that employers recognize as a great asset. This program is advanced practice intended for Licensed Opticians. This program will give you the knowledge and skills to both dispense and fit clients with contact lenses and is only available to those already working in the optical industry.
The Optical Sciences Contact Lenses program is a two-semester, advanced practice program. Each semester is approximately 3 1/2 months in length (semesters are run concurrently in Fall and Winter).
Students complete the theory portion online and the clinical portion (practicum) at their workplace. The practicum consists of on-the-job training, similar in nature to an apprenticeship. Students perfect their skills under the direct supervision of a qualified preceptor at their place of employment.
