How Using Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace Guarantees A Successful Practice

Dr Maria Sampalis enumerates how effective communication and an understanding relationship existing between an employer and their employees is necessary for her practice to be successful. Moreover, extending compassion and patience to customers has helped her practice achieve a 90% patient retention rate.

She stresses that one of the best ways to improve a practice is to effectually communicate with your staff in order to get genuine feedback regarding patient flow systems, and the practice as a whole. It will be important to hold regular staff meetings to hear employees’ opinions and thoughts about how the office is running. As a business owner, it is important to be able to receive criticism from your staff without being defensive or rigid about company policies. Moreover, try to work with your staff to be able to pinpoint where exactly weaknesses or issues are arising within the practice. Also, to create an amiable atmosphere among your staff, you can go out with them occasionally for company dinners. This can also create a relaxed atmosphere where staff can open up to you about ideas for the business.

In order to create a happy environment for patients, Dr Sampalis recommends working with your staff to develop techniques to provide patients with the best care. Come up with code words or phrases that can be used among staff to signify when a patient has arrived upset or stressed. It is a good way to convey to staff that they should treat said patient more sensitively. Furthermore, you can also try to ask patients how they are doing and let them know that you are there for them as a client. Offer them the option to reschedule their appointment with no negative consequences. It is necessary to show patients that you care about their overall health and general mood.

Dr Sampalis also recommends that opticians take patients’ buyer’s remorse very seriously. Starting to wear glasses is a big change for many as it does affect their physical appearance. Try to be patient as possible with patients who are unhappy with the frames that they purchase. You can consider offering patients the option to swap their frames with others similar to theirs in another colour or frames within their price range. The best possible outcome will always be a patient leaving your office happy.
